CAVE – the future of education: how Aliant and Antycip brought state-of-the-art virtual reality to Romania

Education enters the era of total immersion
In an absolute first for Romania, Aliant, in partnership with Antycip, inaugurated the first virtual reality (VR) laboratory at the “Vasile Alecsandri” University of Bacău, marking a historic moment for the digitalization of university education.
At the heart of this revolutionary project is a CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) system – an immersive 3D visualization and simulation platform that transforms learning into a fully interactive experience.

What is CAVE and why it changes everything
Immersive CAVE systems are considered the cutting edge of VR technologies applied in education and research.
They provide 3D projection on multiple surfaces, surrounding the user with high-resolution images and surround sound. In the Bacău laboratory, the Aliant–Antycip CAVE includes:
▪3.0 × 3.5 × 2.2 m projection room, capable of hosting up to 20 users;
▪Barco 4K projectors for precise visual rendering;
▪ART spatial tracking system with IR cameras and haptic sensors for natural interaction;
▪XPAND 3D / Volfoni 3D VR headset and stereo glasses;
▪SkyReal and MiddleVR VR software, which enables industrial simulations, real-time collaboration and rapid 3D content creation;
▪Denon AVR-X3800H audio system, for a complete auditory experience.

From theory to practice through immersion
The CAVE Laboratory offers unprecedented possibilities for Romanian higher education:
Engineering and virtual manufacturing – simulation of production lines and digital prototyping;
Medicine and medical training – simulation of surgical interventions and detailed analysis of anatomy;
Architecture and urbanism – realistic visualization of projects before construction;
Social sciences and history – reconstruction of historical events and behavioral analysis in controlled environments.

Through this laboratory, teachers can develop interactive lessons and students can explore complex concepts intuitively, getting closer to real practice than ever before.

CAVE – the catalyst for digital transformation
The Virtual Reality Immersion Lab demonstrates the power of collaboration and shared vision in driving educational innovation,” said Relu Chelmuș, Business Development Manager at Aliant.
For his part, John Mould, Commercial Manager at Antycip, emphasized that this project “reaffirms the commitment to bringing immersive technologies to academia and inspiring a new generation of innovators.”

An investment in the skills of the future
Part of the PNRR project “Developing skills for the professions of the future through digitalization”, the CAVE laboratory at the University of Bacău is a symbol of Romania’s transition to education 4.0 — a model of integration between technology, creativity and applied knowledge.

With the help of Aliant, Antycip, Barco, ART, VDL and SkyReal, Romania is taking a major step towards a smart and immersive educational ecosystem.
CAVE is not just a projection room – it is a gateway to the future, where learning becomes experience and innovation becomes reality.
