The first mobile phone: a revolution started with a call
In a world where instant communication is taken for granted and smartphones are ubiquitous, it's almost hard to imagine the humble beginnings of mobile telephony. But its fascinating history begins with timid steps and culminates in a revolution that has radically transformed the way we live, work, and interact.
Pioneers of wireless communication – military and experimental beginnings
The first forms of mobile communication appeared in the first half of the 20th century, but they had nothing in common with the idea of a “mobile phone” today. They were heavy transceivers intended exclusively for vehicles – taxis, ambulances, police cars or military equipment. They could not be connected to the classic telephone network and required specialized operators.
After 1940, Motorola produced the famous “Handie-Talkie” station, used intensively by the US army. In Europe, the first experiments with radio telephony date back to 1926, when it was introduced in luxury trains between Berlin and Hamburg, then extended to airplanes and German military vehicles during World WarII.
The first prototypes and the idea of a mobile phone
A significant moment occurred in 1946, when in the USSR, two engineers – G. Saphiro and I. Zakharchenko – tested a vehicle-mounted telephone that could call the local network within a radius of 20 km.
In 1947, researchers at Bell Labs, Douglas H. and W. Rae Young, first proposed the concept of cellular telephony – a network made up of hexagonal cells that allowed for frequency reuse and increased call capacity. However, the lack of suitable technology delayed its implementation for several decades.
In parallel, Leonid Kuprianovich from Moscow built a 3 kg portable “radiophone” in 1957, with a dial wheel, an autonomy of up to 30 hours and a range of 30 km. A year later, he developed a pocket version, weighing only 500 grams – an amazing progress for that time.
The 1970s – the mobile phone comes to life
After decades of experimentation and prototypes, the turning point came on April 3, 1973. Martin Cooper, an engineer at Motorola, made the first call with a portable mobile phone – the DynaTAC 8000X – while walking down a street in New York. He even called his rival at Bell Labs, Joel Engel, saying: “Joel, I’m calling you on a real mobile phone!”
The phone weighed over 2 pounds, offered only 30 minutes of talk time, but it symbolized a giant leap: for the first time, a call could be made without wires, without a car, without limits.
1983 – DynaTAC becomes a commercial reality
It took 10 years from the first call until the first portable mobile phone hit the market. In 1983, Motorola officially launched the DynaTAC 8000X, at a staggering price of $3,995. Although it was bulky, with a visible antenna and an extremely short battery life, this model sold like hot cakes among business people and those who wanted to be "in step with the future".
It was the beginning of a new era: the mobile phone was no longer just a tool, but a symbol of social status.
Also in those years, the first commercial cellular network was launched in Chicago, based on AMPS technology.
The 90s – Downsizing, autonomy, accessibility
As technology advanced, mobile phones began to become smaller, cheaper and smarter. In the 90s, phones such as the Nokia 1011, the first GSM phone sold, or the famous Motorola StarTAC, the first flip phone – which brought a step closer to true portability – appeared.
Also during this period, mobile networks expanded rapidly, and mobile telephony went from a fad to a necessity.
The 90s marked the transition from massive phones to increasingly compact and accessible devices. GSM (2G) was launched, a digital technology that allowed not only calls, but also SMS, data transfer and more stable connectivity.
Phones became lighter and lighter – from 1 kg to under 200 g – and names like Nokia or Motorola became synonymous with mobility. Networks are expanding, and the mobile phone is finally becoming an everyday object.
2000 and beyond – from communication to digital life
The launch of third generation (3G) in 2001 in Japan paves the way for the era of mobile internet. Phones become smartphones, capable of browsing the web, playing multimedia content and accessing complex applications.
Then comes 4G (2012) and 5G (after 2019), accelerating speeds, reducing latencies and paving the way for augmented reality, the Internet of Things and embedded artificial intelligence.
From 1 kg to 150 grams and from calls to augmented reality
Looking back, it's almost unbelievable how far we've come. From a 1.1 kg phone with a single purpose – to call someone – we've reached smartphones that can control your home, monitor your health and give you instant access to global information. Today, a smartphone is no longer just a phone. It's a camera, a GPS navigator, a wallet, a television, a work tool and a source of entertainment.
But without that first call made by Martin Cooper in 1973, the mobile communication revolution may not have begun then. It was a defining moment, a "Hello, world!" transmitted wirelessly – and one that changed the world forever.
