Telegrams: the first "Instant Messengers" and the roots of cybersecurity

In today's era of hyper-connectivity, where a Slack message, an email, or a cloud collaboration session reaches its destination in milliseconds, we often forget that the need for rapid and private communication is not a modern phenomenon. In the 19th century, the telegram was the first form of "instant messaging," radically transforming how businesses and governments operated globally.

However, with speed came a critical vulnerability: interception. Here, in the dust of telegraph wires, lie the origins of the cybersecurity we know today.

The telegram: the 19th-century internet and the first security breaches

The telegraph achieved the impossible for its time: it shrank continental distances. While letters previously took weeks to travel, the telegram transmitted messages almost instantaneously. Yet, this technology had an "Achilles' heel."

The infrastructure relied on intermediate stations where human operators had to receive and retransmit messages. These operators had direct access to the content of the communication, which led to the emergence of industrial and political espionage simply by "listening in" on the wire.

This vulnerability forced companies and governments to get creative. The need for early encryption emerged: secret codes, private dictionaries, substitution ciphers, and archaic authentication protocols. This was the first lesson in information security: in an open network, data integrity and confidentiality are not implicit, they must be actively built.

While a 19th-century "spy" needed physical access to copper wires, today's risks have migrated into the digital space. Modern threats, such as Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, are the digital equivalent of the telegraphic interception of yesteryear.
